True Christian Athletes

Flag football is a wonderful invention that allows average people to enjoy a version of the game they enjoy without the aches, pains, and bonecrushing hits of real american football. that was a perfect setup to have a Christian hosted flag football tournament for the enjoyment of all. but somewhere in that tourny all hell broke loose. sports and competition are no sin. often times in the Bible, Paul refers to sports and competition as a way to teach a spiritual truth (1 corinthians 9:24-27). where is it then that we as Christian Athletes lose our focus and sometimes all our Christian values (or so it seems).
There is a certain mentality and passion required to be a athlete, but there is also a certain mentality and passion required to be a Christian. a True Christian Athlete is one who can find the balance between both of those ideas. there are many Christians in the world who are athletes, put them in a close competitive game of flag football and their true color shows. unfortunatly for those who competed in the tourny, including myself, the color was not what it should of been. a True Christian Athlete will compete at the highest level ("run in such a way to get the prize" 1 corinthians 9:24), but also keeping a witness of a Christ ("but the fruit of the Spirit is... self-control... since we live by the spirit let us keep in step with the spirit" galatians 5). somewhere in the games i myself lost that witness and selfcontrol, along with afew of my other brothers in christ. I use this as an apology for my actions and a platform to share whats on my heart.
when you step a the court or feild always strive to be a True Christian Athlete. be a witness to Christ, by using the talents given to you by God. don't let them be wasted in arguments, dirty play, and schuffles with the opponent.

" 24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They (athletes) then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we (True Christian Athletes) an imperishable. 26 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 27 but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified."

in Christ...

I find your blog to be very interesting, and I must say that I agree on all levels. being able to keep that balance is not easy and you are proving that you are a true christian athlete by apologizing and truly caring about your spiritual performance on the field. That is very respectable.

I definatly agree. I took it as a learning experience - I made a mistake in some cases, and part of it is that you have to learn from it. Nice blog B. Sok
