I'm taking New Testament (amazing class), and also reading through Ephesians on my own. It seems that the more and more I study the NT, especially Paul's writings, I come across this idea of encouraging or building up of other believers. Here's some examples:

1 Thes. 5:11- Encourage to avoid worldly things

Romans 1:12- Encouraged through each others faith

Colossians 2:1-5- Paul is at a struggle to... Encourage the hearts of others, through their hearts being bound in love, so that they can reach the full understanding of Christ (sorry if that's confusing... it makes sense in my mind.)

Romans 15:1-6- Support weaker believers, encourage them, and live in harmony.

Philippians 2:1-11- Read this passage if you don't read any of the others.

These are just a few examples of Paul talking about encouragement of believers. This is a major topic and it needs to be discussed. How can we encourage? This is open for discussion but I have come up with 4 ways to do so...

Encourage to abstain from sin

Encourage through personal stories of the Holy Spirit's work in your life... with humility

Through love, serve others unconditionally.

Aid in the spiritual growth of others (mentoring, discipling, etc.)

Through these 4 things, and others you might have, we as believers can reach our goal. That goal is to live in the unity of our mind and spirit, so that we can function together as component parts of the Body of Christ, as well as achieve a full understanding of Christ, which ultimately glorifies God.

I came up with this equation to apply it to our lives... placing others above ourselves plus encouragement equals glorifying Christ in 1 accord.

I hope that this post does 2 things... First, I hope it sparks action. My prayer is that each one of us will look for opportunities daily so that we may encourage other believers. This should be a spiritual discipline just as important as our quiet time in my opinion. Secondly, I would like to hear your opinions and thoughts on this topic. May we be mutually encouraged through discussion over this issue.

water

I was watching Planet Earth the other day, and words can't describe some of the things that that series has captured on camera. One of my favorite episodes is "Pole to Pole". It covers the whole earth but it has a large focus on how the sun and the water constantly interact with each other to bring life to every part of the world. One part in particular describes the life giving power of water in the desert plains of Africa. To summerize the water that melts from mountains travels thousands of miles over 5 months, and provides life to millions of animals in the center of the Africa. My jaw hit the floor when It showed the satelite images of the desert becoming a lush green oasis. I thanked God for the beauty of His creation. The story doesn't end there.

The next sunday the pastor taught out of Psalm 1, and water was brought to my mind again. It was obvious God was trying to teach me something, and He did. It was later that sunday night that he revealed to me His sovereignty and power. I looked at such verses as John 4:10, John 7:37-39, and Jeremiah 17:5-8.

The use of water throughout the bible from the old testament all the way to the new testament is a great picture of how God works in our lives. When Jesus mentioned that He was the living water, the jews immediately new that he was comparing himself to the life giving streams of psalms and jeremiah. We also know that now just as those trees in the scriptures (or blessed men) are sustained by the water, we as believers are now sustained by the Holy Spirit or according to John 7:37-39, The Living Water. this is amazing stuff. Better yet the streams of the old testament produced fruit on the tree by the stream, just as the Holy Spirit is what powers the growth of the fruits of the Spirit in our lives. pause and thank God before we look beyond the scriptures.

As stated by Planet Earth, and confirmed by my genius friend John Weston, a biology major. "No life could exist on earth without water." So in other words God created the earth totally dependent on water. That's when His Power and Sovereignty hit me like a ton of bricks. God created a world totally dependent on water, so that we could understand that we need to be totally dependent on Him. take a pause to ponder and praise Him for this.

This is great stuff right but just knowing this won't benefit us that much, how can I apply this revelation to my life? The streams of the OT produced the fruits of and sustained the tree. So also the Holy Spirit Produces and sustains in our lives as believers. but what are our roots, how do we tap into this life giving water. I pondered on a few. of course there is Prayer, Meditation, studying the Bible, but I feel that the edification of other believers and the sacrifice for others are also 2 major ways to connect with the Holy Spirit and tap into the Living Water.

My hope is that I can continually have roots in the Living Water, so that God can be glorified through the fruit that He has produced in my life.

2 vs 3

North Carolina vs. Duke

Dickie V makes his return

Let's Go Heels

Jeremiah

Imagine that the light from the left of the painting is coming from the flames of the Temple as it is being destroyed. We remember every detail about that day because it had a lasting impact on our lives. Today I experienced a day such as this. I spent the day at Central State University, an HBCU, for what I titled Diversity Day. This diversity day was much different than the one you might be thinking of, The Office that is. No we didn’t wear cards on our head and explore stereotypes to discover what race we belonged to. Instead I was submerged into a group of multicultural educators who genuinely cared for the future of urban children.
Coming into college I had a good idea of what I would like to do with my life, and it involved sports. I further explored my passions and gifts that the Lord blessed me with, and I began to understand that the way of teaching and coaching was for me. So I thought that I had it figured out, but a passion that was deep within me, sparked by choir tours throughout my years at porter, began to call for my service in an urban environment. I’m still not sure completely how this will unfold but I know that God will use me for His Will.
Today was the beginning of that journey to follow Him in my career. The Urban Education Conference at Central State University opened my eyes to a desperate situation that will impact the future of our country. I learned how I could use my love of rap to reach children. I learned strategies to motivate kids that seem to have nothing to live for. I learned to break down walls that stand between me, a white middle class teacher, and a class of diverse low income students. The lessons learned and the passion it has sparked in my heart; I hope I never forget.
The day ended with a celebration of diversity between Central State University and Cedarville University. Students and faculty joined together singing praises to our Lord. One speaker mentioned something, which helped put the accomplishments of MLK into perspective for me, and will help me to appreciate his achievements this coming Monday. “…It is not too long ago that some of us would not be welcome into this building, other than to clean it... Thankfully today we can stand together under the banner, “children of God”, and praise Him who created all men equally.”

Pray for me as the Lord equips me these next few years to serve him through urban education.

?

Why do we plan street evangelism, but walk the same streets in silence everyday?
How come Christians turn evangelism into an event instead of a lifestyle?

recently i've been rolling these questions through my head and i can't figure out a way to get them out other than this... a free-write. after this sentence i'm going to turn the monitor off and just type what i feel, please excuse any errors, i'll go back and change only major ones.

Friday nights in cedarvile ohio have become outreach night for my friends and i. we have gone out to different socal locations i.e barnes and noble and looked for oppurtunities to evangelize. this is great but my problem is the planning of this "event". why has it been reduce to an event and not a lifestyle. we go into stores and movies nad bars (jk) and socialize about nonsense most of the time, if we eeven socialize at all. why on't we share the hoppe within. why don't we save people from HELL!!!!!!! Today I announce that I am now a follower of the NBA. More specificly the Phoenix Suns. I have never had a favorite NBA team because of ignorance and I was always busy. Now with my free time in college I can watch the Sun's, enjoy the game, and still learn basketball. One of the main reasons for my "signing" with the Sun's is their style of offense. They play very free lance, with alot of pick and rolls. This in turn sets up the 3 point shooters on the perimeter. It's an art. Secondly I have began a book titled, "7 seconds or less." it gives a behind the scences look at the Sun's for an entire season. It's comical, insightful, and a great read.
So for future gift purchases please note that Phoenix Sun's merchandise will now be accepted. keep it real.

Creation Appreciation pt. 1

<img style="float:left; I catch the ball in the corner and drive baseline, as I go up to shoot the shot I get undercut and land on my head. Or at least that’s what I’m told.

There is a span of 20 minutes that I have no memory of due to a grade 1 concussion suffered Friday night during a game. The strange thing is… I was awake and talking the entire time during the whole ordeal but I can’t remember anything that happened during that 20 minutes. All that I can remember is checking into the game with about 10 minutes to go in the 1st half, and then the next thing I can remember was sitting on the bench at halftime. It was crazy, and I’ve got a permanent for about 2 or 3 days now. If you can remember say a little prayer for me.

good from bad

Just wanted to updated on what i experienced this weekend. Saturday i woke up around 10 a.m. and began a 4 hour series of vomitting. seems depressing but some good came out of this.

1. Those 2 days of doing nothing turned into and update on "The Office"

It recently came to attention that i had missing out on a diamond in the rough, and this weekend i quinched my thirst. i watched seasons 1, 2, and the all the released episodes of season 3. i must say that i'm addicted and "that's what she said".

so if i start every question with the statement, "question"... don't mind it.

Mark Cahill

Today Mark Cahill spoke in our chapel. He brought straight fire, and told amazing stories of how he has been able to witness to people. This man is truely "on-fire" for Christ, by being so passionate about sharing the gospel. His challenge for us was out of Luke 16:19-31 the story of the rich man and lazarus. He made it very clear the importance of sharing the gospel to as many people as possible. Even those in hell and scream for us to share with thier families and friends just as the rich man did.

Out of many quotes from his speech this one was very powerful: "In the Christian life we are not enjoying a pleasure cruise to Heaven. We are on a battleship at the gates of Hell trying to keep as many people out of there as possible." That's a very strong statement. I wish all Christians including myself could live it.

His new book is out, and is called "One Heartbeat Away". It's an amazing book not only to encourage you to witness, but it's main purpose if for you to give to a lost friend and let them read it.

If you would like to hear his message you can go onto:

http://www.thepath.fm/chapel/

and click on november 16th where it says, mark cahill. It was an amazing service and will definately have an impact on your life.

our first single

Recently me and a friend decided that we should become more actively involved with Christian rap music. I am still a faithful kansas state wildcat fan. we have a new coach and a freshman quarterback that's led us to a 4-2 record.

2. I am not jumpin on the bandwagon because thier number 1 in the country.

I say that, to say this... I am a supporter of Ohio State Buckeye football. notice i say supporter meaning this, in any game they play unless it is kansas state i will cheer for them. my reason is 2 fold, they are amazing to watch offensively. they have amazing athletes that make amazing plays and it's quite entertaining.

but the most important reason is this. The football team is hosting an outreach program called, "The Main Event". 5 Ohio state players will be speaking as well as a gosple presentation from head coach Jim Tressel. to me this is amazing. for the #1 team in the country to take the time to reach out to the OSU campus.

I understand that this will put a big dent in my relationship with my father and brother, but it's something i have to support.

also me and other cedarville students will be serving as a counselor.

GO BUCKEYES!

Correction... Why is this man appearing on brandon's blog?
very good questions, so i'll answer. This fine man is Brandon Sok. Today i logged onto facebook as i always do when i have nothing better to do. I had a friend request from, brandon. Didn't seem weird but i didn't recognize the picture. I read through his profile still unsure if i knew this kid. In the "about me" section i looked and to my astonishment i saw my name, Brandon Sok!!! I was floored. This whole time i thought i had a very unique name. I knew their were oriental Sok's but i've never heard of an oriental named Brandon. This is what he has written on his facebook:

wsup,
My name is Brandon Sok , currently a sophmore at UMSL. I am Korean ( the southern part just in case), and about 5'8". I might be a lil shy at first but when i get to know someone or in the mood, then i get pretty noisy. Very outgoing, open minded, easy to talk to, love to chillax. I just moved to st louis from LA about a year and a half ago, and still adjusting to this new environment, but so far so good, except for the weather.

This is so weird and strange. I thought i was the one brandon sok, but know me and brandon sok get to share this honor. Random but interesting. peace

Still pray for me and joel we leave for our mission tomorrow.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brandonsok.blogspot.com/2006/10/correction-party-of-2.html' title='Correction... Despite all the hype about how hard it was gonna be... it wasn't really too bad. It was alot of fun cause unlike high school we didn't just waste our time scrimmaging and stuff like that. we did alot of defensive drills with suprisingly weren't that bad, even though i hate defense. So watch out. haha just kiddin. I'll be playing as a 3 and 4 this year. if you don't know basketball thats small foward and power foward. but in our offense the power foward is really like a small foward. for other info check out
http://yellowjackets.cedarville.edu/2006-07/mbk/index.htm

if you would please pray for me and joel walton (cedarville friend), we're takin part in unique ministry this weekend.

does God exist?

answer:

"God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived."

what do you think?

Devotions & Sex

How many times do you base your spiritual life on whether or not you had a "quiet time" with God that day? While those devotions are very important they are what christianity is all about.

In most Christian's regular day (mine included) they will; 1. wake up 2. go to work school 3. fill the rest of the day with other "activities" 4. go to bed. Some time, usually right when you get up or right before bed, you sqeeze in some time with God. Again there is no problem with the short devotion before bed, but where is God the rest of the day? If the Christian life speaks only to these quiet times and FAITH on monday night, then it does not address most of our lives. If life includes more than prayer, bible reading, and evangelism. Then the Christian life must include more as well. Let's compare that to I dunno... sex.

These Christian acts are to a christian, what sex is to a marriage. Sex is probably the high point of marrage. Who am i kiddin? it is the high point of a marriage. but in the back of our minds we know that marriage is alot more than sex. Marriages work when both people support each other in all areas. The Christian's succeed when they honor God in all aspects of their lives. This is exactly why every Christian needs to develope a "christian world view".

We must learn to think Christianly about everything in our lives. As a Christian what should we think about; Brushing our teeth, playing sports, watching "Family Guy", Hurricane Katrina, 9/11, lawn work, and anything else that we come across daily.

Luckily at Cedarville I am getting an oppurtunity work at this daily in my classes and activities. Part of Cedarville's mission statement is to equip each student with a "Christian World View" and a Bible minor. In the near future... right now, Work on your developement of a "Christian World View". Also don't base your marriage on sex, i mean don't base your Christianity on your "quiet time". Live life to the fullest and include God in on all the fun.

Arrived

I arrived at cedarville today at 9 a.m. and was totally moved in by 10:30. this basically allowed me to suffer from extreme bordem for the next few hours because the other guys in the pod didn't show up to later. I'll be alone for the first night because my roommate had to work today and was unable to move in. I'm very excited about the up coming year because my fellow pod members are all very cool. This will also be a good year because i'll be able to enjoy any sporting event of my choice on a 55 inch HD plasma TV. Also i don't have to pay for laundry, and i could potentially have 6 meals a day on my meal plan.

All other college freshman comment on how your move in went at UK, asbury, or anyother college.

b. sok

p.s. I said, "yeah only a few." there was a slight pause then came, "I Overdrew!"

-"I didn't think it would be hot!" this came after justin dropped a bowl of soup/chili. it shattered the bowl and spilled everywhere. The funny part is he had put the bowl in the microwave for 3 minutes. what's not gonna be hot after 3 minutes in a microwave.

-"if i had 3 more inches i'd be unstoppable." this came while talking with some friends at church about basketball. he was under the impression that if he was 3 inches taller he would be the ultimate basketball player. while he is decent at basketball 3 inches would still leave him in the stoppable column.

-"It is a recent developement that I will not have the money to go." this is a line out his post about the Desiring God Conference, and is only comical because only weeks ago he commented on dave's blog, "i have money, i have more money than alot of people." enough said.

This has just been a time of reflection for my peers and i on his classic yet thoughtless comments. this however is not in anyway a direct insult to my brother, he's a baller and i would do anything for him. so in the future listen closely to his words, cause you're bound to catch a laugh.

Wednesday Night Basketball

I must say last night's basketball at church was solid all the way through. Competition remained strong through out the night, and it was the good competition. You know the kind without stupid arguements and complaints. Hopefully it will remain this way so that we can honor Christ through our game(see True Christian Athletes). this is something that I have tried to work on in my life for some time cause pride dies hard.

I would also like to apologize to dave and woody for bringing "the beast" aka lonnie, a fellow Sears employee. Lonnie is 6'9" and of good size. The first shot put up by woody and dave were sent right back into their faces, in the same possesion. it was quite comical.

Of course the Jackson brothers brought in good times, and woody i guess still feeling the effects of the blocked shot to the face ran down the court with the moon in full effect. All good signs that PMBC basketball is back on the rise. For all the pagans who do not know what the title means here is a brief explantion. After "His Greatness" aka Michael Jordan retired he came back wearing his brother's high school number 45!!! and a small snipet of jordan facts: he Originally wore 23 because he wanted to be half the player his brother was.

b. sok

p.s. I use this as an apology for my actions and a platform to share whats on my heart.
when you step a the court or feild always strive to be a True Christian Athlete. be a witness to Christ, by using the talents given to you by God. don't let them be wasted in arguments, dirty play, and schuffles with the opponent.

" 24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They (athletes) then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we (True Christian Athletes) an imperishable. 26 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 27 but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified."

in Christ...

Rookie

Whats up my bloggers?! this is a big moment for me, well for one big reason, I'm joining the Blogging World!!! it's kinda odd that i used to ridicule the bloggers but now i join them in their frolicking on the open plains of expression. stay watching for some up coming blogs on sports to religion and everything in between, and no i won't be a Sokrates like my bro. don't have much to say, except a shout out to all my peoples.
